A much lighter version of the classic croque-monsieur? Yes, it's possible! You can replace the ham with turkey ham and use gruyère or light gruyère instead of comté cheese.

Instructions

  • 1.   Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (392 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • 2.   Prepare the béchamel sauce:
In a cup, heat the milk in the microwave for one to one and a half minutes.
Mix the cornstarch with two tablespoons of water and pour into the hot milk.
Put it back in the microwave for a few moments until it reaches a creamy consistency. Do this in several intervals, making sure the mixture doesn't overflow in case of boiling.
Season with salt and pepper, and add a little grated nutmeg (if you like).
  • 3.   Spread a tablespoon of béchamel sauce on a large slice of American sandwich bread.
  • 4.   Place the ham on top and cover with the second slice of bread.
  • 5.   Spread a generous tablespoon of béchamel sauce on top and sprinkle with grated cheese.
  • 6.   Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until the croque-monsieur is golden brown.
  • 7.   Serve with a green salad.
