Mojito

Highly appreciated by American writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway, who used to enjoy it regularly when he lived in Cuba, the Mojito is a traditional Cuban cocktail that originated in the 1910s. Legend has it that the history of the Mojito dates back to the early 16th century when English explorer and privateer Francis Drake, in between raids on Havana, enjoyed sipping crushed mint leaves with tafia (industrial rum).

Instructions

  • 1.   Squeeze the lime.
Crush the ice cubes. (using a blender or place them in a bag and use a rolling pin to crush them)
  • 2.   Pour the lime juice into the glass.
Add the sugar and mix well to avoid feeling the sugar crystals when tasting the cocktail.
  • 3.   Place the mint leaves.
Muddle with a cocktail muddler (or alternatively, use a wooden spoon) to release the essential oils.
Be careful not to tear the mint leaves.
  • 4.   Pour the rum.
Add the crushed ice, leaving 2 cm of space. The more ice, the slower it will melt.
    Mix well.
